With his “Sinners” film having become the best-reviewed wide release of the decade, and set to beat expectations at the box-office this weekend, filmmaker Ryan Coogler is already looking towards what’s next.
Appearing on Last Podcast on the Left, he was asked what will be he his next project and he made the answer pretty clear – his long-rumored “The X-Files” series reboot.
News of the project first emerged when Coogler’s production company Proximity signed a first-look TV deal with Disney in 2021 and was made clear back in 2023 when original series creator Chris Carter teased Coogler was developing the new take that would boast a diverse cast.
Last year Carter confirmed he wouldn’t be involved in the show but Coogler very much had his blessing to proceed. Now, Coogler indicates that the runway has been cleared with the reboot readying for take-off:
“I’m working on X-Files. That’s what’s immediately next. So, I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f–king scary.”
The original series followed FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who investigate supernatural phenomena ranging from a global conspiracy involving alien colonisation to more monstrous events involving all sorts of creatures.
The original run lasted nine seasons from 1993 to 2001 before being revived for two more seasons in 2016. In total, 218 episodes were produced, along with two feature films. It won 16 Emmys in its time and had a massive influence on many subsequent TV genre projects.
