Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” is on a roll. Buoyed by excellent critical and audience reviews, the film beat its estimates to deliver a final domestic opening weekend haul of $48 million following a better-than-expected take of $12.3 million on Sunday, reports Deadline.

The $90 million-budget film has charted some of the best review aggregate scores for an original wide release movie in many years, and pulled in an ‘A’ CinemaScore – a feat no other horror film has been able to pull off.

So the question becomes how much a multiple of its opening will it take with estimates for its total domestic haul coming in anywhere between $178 million if it does “A Quiet Place” style 3.7x is opening, to as high as $250 million if it hits the kind of rarely seen 5.3x multiple which “Get Out” had.

It will need it. While the U.S. launch has been a rousing success on basically every level and a celebration of an original work being a hit, the film’s overseas launch hasn’t been nearly as strong with the title pulling in just $15.4 million offshore in its debut weekend in over 70 countries.

The New York Times reports that the film cost Warner Bros. “at least $150 million to make and market worldwide” which means it needs to earn at least $250-300 million to make back its cost. That’s different to most horror, which often succeeds by being quite cost-effective.

“Sinners” also had the largest opening for an entirely original movie since Jordan Peele’s “Nope” in 2022. That $68 million-budgeted film had a $44 million opening weekend and went on to collect a total of $171 million worldwide.
