Don’t Expect “Sinners 2,” Expect “Minecraft 2”

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie” are currently dominating the box-office, the pair holding the top two spots with $48 million and $40.5 million respectively.

Aside from both providing a very much needed shot in the arm at the box-office, both couldn’t be more different. One is a very R-rated, contained, vampire meets blues music genre mashup based on an original idea. The other a PG-rated, somewhat trippy family tentpole film based on a famed piece of IP.

With success though comes the question of whether the studio will proceed with a sequel to try and recapture the magic. In the case of “Sinners,” the film’s director Ryan Coogler makes it pretty clear – it’s not happening.

Coogler certainly has experience with franchises including “Creed” and “Black Panther”. Speaking to Ebony in a recent interview, he says the reason to do “Sinners” was “to get away from” franchises and craft a one-off experience:

“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.

I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”

On the other hand with “A Minecraft Movie,” you can bet your life there will be a sequel.

Speaking about the film’s success, the title pulling in over $700 million in under three weeks so far, Warner Bros. executive Jesse Ehrman tells The Financial Times it would be “foolish” not to do a follow-up:

“I mean, we’d be foolish not to. The fans want more, so hopefully we’ll be able to figure something out.”

Ehrman also discussed the whole Chicken Jockey viral craze that came out of the film, saying:

“I’d be lying if I said I knew that [chicken jockey] would be a thing, but it was something that we talked about. You can’t account for the emergent behaviour and the things that people connect with. You just want to create a movie that feels fun and authentic to people’s engagement and experience with the game. And if you’re rigorous about that, then these things can happen.”

“Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” director Jared Hess helmed the “Minecraft” film and has previously indicated he’d be happy to return.
