Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirms that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is still in development, now with a new writing partner. Following Star Wars Celebration this weekend, Kennedy spoke with Screen Rant, here is what she had to say about Waititi’s long gestating Star Wars film.
“Taika is on Taika time… I’ve just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you’re ready and you can really devote the time, we’re going to do it. We’ll be waiting… I’m just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie.”

‘Kennedy insisted that the movie will be waiting for him, also commenting that screenwriter Tony McNamara of Poor Things fame is penning the script and working well with Waititi. Kennedy wrapped up by stating that Waititi has such a unique way of telling stories, sharing her desire that they can get through development and tell a great Star Wars story.’

Of course, there’s no guarantee this film actually goes into production. Kennedy obviously has heard the pitch and likes it. However, it remains up to Waititi and McNamara to get a script in place for Waititi to film.
There’s seems to be a push to get Star Wars films into theatres. It remains to be seen what quality of films we will get. First up we have The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is effectively a spin-off movie version of Mandalorian Season 4. That movie releases on May 22, 2026. Then we have Star Wars: Starfighter directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling coming in May, 2027. There’s a Rey sequel still in development, and a Simon Kinberg led trilogy in development. Plus, we have Waititi’s movie in development.
