Paramount Plans New “Sonic” Spin-Offs

In under three weeks, “A Minecraft Movie” has already surpassed the $700 million box-office mark globally, overcoming its mixed reviews to become the second-highest-grossing video game film of all time at present.

Combined with other recent success stories of video game-to-screen adaptations on film and TV, studios are quickly moving forward with more, including Paramount Pictures, which has more plans for its “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise.

The Wrap reports that Paramount is reportedly interested in making “Sonic” spin-off movies in addition to the upcoming fourth main feature.

The plan is apparently for film spin-offs, rather than TV spin-offs like “Knuckles” which hit last year. That show became the most-watched original series on Paramount+ but also scored criticism for the notably limited screen time of its title character.

Still, a Sonic Cinematic Universe does seem to be happening. The most obvious candidate going by fan remarks is for a Shadow spin-off following the Keanu Reeves-voiced character who was shown in a post-credits scene to have survived the events of the third “Sonic” film.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” pulled in not just the best reviews of the franchise so far, but also an impressive $491.9 million worldwide box-office and was the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2024. The fourth film is in the works with plans for a March 2027 release.
