Rian Johnson Open To “Knives Out 4”

“Brick,” “Looper” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson has spent much of the past few years dealing with murder mysteries.

From helming three “Knives Out” films, the third of which arrives later this year, to producing and partly directing Peacock’s “Poker Face” series, he’s had his plate full with stories of murder and quirky detectives.

That may be coming to an end, or rather a pause, shortly. Out promoting the second season of “Poker Face,” he was asked by Collider if a fourth “Knives Out” film is a possibility.

He says he’s open to more stories with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, but the pair are going to take a break from the mystery genre:

“As long as Daniel [Craig] still wants to keep doing it and as long as we have an idea that, to us, feels not just like cranking another one out, but feels genuinely exciting and scary like, ‘Oh, wow, could we pull that off?’ I love the genre. It’s endlessly malleable, and so it holds endless possibilities.

But at the same time, I have made three of them in a row. I don’t feel burnt out on it at all, but the next thing I have in my head to write is an original that’s not a mystery at all. It’s a totally different genre.

One of the things I love about the mystery genre is that it holds the whodunit. Like sci-fi, it encompasses so many other types of genres. ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ this next movie, is so different than ‘Glass Onion.’ It’s like night and day. And so, as long as we keep doing that, it’s exciting.”

That he’s pursuing work on an original means it’s likely his proposed “Star Wars” trilogy is still very much on the back burner for the forseeable future.

The third “Knives Out” film, “Wake Up Dead Man,” is expected to arrive this Fall and stars Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack and Thomas Haden Church.
