“Jurassic World: Dominion” Budget Hits $465M

Recently released UK tax filings have revealed that “Jurassic World: Dominion” has, unsurprisingly, become one of the most expensive movies of all time.

Forbes and The Guardian report that the 2022 feature, the third of the “Jurassic World” films and sixth of the “Jurassic Park” franchise, cost $583.9 million (£453.6 million) to make – beating previous record holder “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which cost £452 million to make.

The previous film, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” cost $555.4 million (£432 million) to make, bringing the last two “Jurassic World” film budgets to a combined total of $1.1 billion.

With its returning stars, ‘Dominion’ cost so much in part because it was filmed at the height of the pandemic in 2020 – the cast having to quarantine for five months at the opulent Langley hotel near Pinewood Studios.

Both Marvel Studios “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Infinity War” together cost more, coming in at a combined total of $1.3 billion (£1 billion). However, their filings were made by the same Disney subsidiary so it’s not possible to tell how much was spent on each one.

Films made in the U.S. are able to keep their budgets secret, and studios combine their spending on all of their productions into their overall expenses – making individual film budgets trickier to define.

‘Dominion’ also reportedly received a massive $114.8 million (£89.1 million) reimbursement from the UK government, reportedly the largest payment to a single movie since the U.K. introduced its film fiscal incentive scheme in 2007. It also scored a further $3.7 million from the UK’s Coronavirus job retention scheme.

The result is ‘Dominion’ came in at a net cost of $465.4 million (£361.7 million), less than one million dollars more than the $464.5 million (£361.3 million) net cost of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” reportedly had a net cost of $447 million.
