Pee-wee’s Big Adventure marked the big-screen debut of Paul Reubens’ beloved character, and it also introduced audiences to director Tim Burton, who was brought on after impressing Reubens and the producers with his shorts Vincent and Frankenweenie. The film raked in over $40 million at the box office and went on to inspire two sequels: 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee and 2016’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.Even nearly 40 years later, the film’s wild charm still holds up.
