“Highlander” Reboot Aims For September Start

Filmmaker Chad Stahelski is reportedly targeting a September start date for production on the reboot of the “Highlander” franchise reports Collider.

The news comes in the wake of a nearly year-long delay regarding a start on the project. Stahelski has been occupied in the last year or so helping get “Ballerina” ready following re-shoots and refining of that Len Wiseman-directed “John Wick” spinoff launching this summer.

Henry Cavill is set to star in the lead role of “Highlander,” but details about it remain scarce. It has been confirmed to start in the early 1500s in the highlands and go beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong.

The project has languished in development hell for many years. Speaking with the outlet this week, Stahelski said:

“If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we’ll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching ‘Highlander.'”

Amazon/MGM and producer Scott Stuber recently acquired the rights to the project, which “John Wick: Chapter 4” co-writer Michael Finch is penning. Speaking about his aims for the film, he says:

“It’s another opportunity to do a property that I love. I love what it’s about, I love working with immortality and love stories through time. I think it’s a good way to take a great period piece, and sci-fi, and mix them together.”

“Highlander” will mark Stahelski’s first directing project outside of that franchise, and his name remains attached to several other projects in development including the film adaptation of the video game “Ghost of Tsushima”.
