“Resident Evil 4” Remake Sells 10M+ Copies

Capcom has announced that the remake of “Resident Evil 4,” which was released in March 2023, has now sold more than 10 million units worldwide since release two years ago.

The acclaimed remake has passed the milestone faster than any other game in the “Resident Evil” series. Those sales numbers are on par with major hits like “The Last of Us Part II” and “Horizon: Zero Dawn” which similarly both sold just over 10 million copies each in their first two years – though they were limited to just one platform at the time whereas the “Resident Evil 4” remake was across multiple platforms.

In terms of earlier catalogue titles which have been out for several years longer, “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” and the “Resident Evil 2” remake have each sold more than 15 million units to date, while “Resident Evil Village” has passed 11 million sales and the “Resident Evil 3” remake has also passed the 10 million mark.

Capcom says the “Resident Evil” series on the whole has now sold more than 167 million units worldwide in total since the first game was released in 1996.

Key to its success is a “long-term catalogue sales strategy” in which games are gradually discounted over time. This approach ensure sales for their single-player titles continue well after release and keep revenue coming in.

The news follows the ESRB recently handing out new ratings for “Resident Evil 5” and “Resident Evil 6” for Xbox Series X/S – suggesting remasters or remakes of the titles are in the works – Capcom has yet to announce which RE title will be their next remake.
