A recent Instagram story fuelled speculation this week that “Raising Hope” and “Deadwood” actor Garret Dillahunt’s role in HBO’s upcoming “Lanterns” TV series will serve as the introduction of Green Arrow in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.

The series is inspired by the “Green Lantern” comics and follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Dillahunt signed on for the series back in November in the role of William Macon, a “modern cowboy” and a “self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade.”

Dillahunt is known for playing villains in multiple shows and films, so it sounded like the sort of antagonist character that’s right up his alley, so not much more was thought of it.

Recently, the actor took to Instagram Stories and posted a storyboard sketch alongside a photo of himself recreating the character – one who strongly resembles the Green Arrow of the comics complete with distinct goatee and green eye mask.

The stories have since been deleted, but it generated a lot of excitement about the possibility. Now though, both Dillahunt and Gunn have shot down the talk. The actor posted on Instagram: “Me? I should be so lucky, but no. Just a Halloween costume from a few years back. I’m just a nerd just a fan…No intent to rile up.”

Gunn meanwhile kept the response simpler, saying on Threads: “Ha Ha, no”. The “Lanterns” series is still in production ahead of a release on the premium cabler sometime next year.
