Wonderful Examples of Design Improvisation, i.e. Redneck Engineering

The Redneck Engineering subReddit is fascinating not because the solutions are elegant, or even necessarily work. It is about seeing the unlikely fixes that people come up with, in the moment, when they:- Do not have the right tool to complete a task- Do not have the right materials, or enough of them, to complete a project- Are not strong enough to perform the desired taskHere are 30-plus examples, with my favorite at the end.Ceiling lamp. Drill press. The drill stays in a fixed position, while the bottle jack is used to crank the workpiece into the bit. Power nippers. One handle is fixed, the other attached to the blade. Suture self. Belt guard for air compressor made from an old ironing board. To compensate for a bad back. To skirt an ordinance where no one is allowed to camp on the land. Potato masher. Ethernet cable. The tattoo of a dedicated fisherman. Ran out of string line. Didn't have enough wood on hand. A license to row. Toilet paper holder and cable management. Not redneck, but post WWII Germany: Military helmets converted into useful farm/household items. Can't get enough torque by hand to break the bolt loose. Compensating for a cracked seal. The original bracket broke. Busted handle, but screwdriver to spare. It was either this or cinderblocks in the pool. "Can you run down to the supermarket and pick up a grill?" No stove, no problem. No microwave, no problem. Darwin Award nominees. Need a hanging rod. Nailed it. Making your own shade. Am dying to know what the application was. Door lock. Tine to shave. Eco-friendly eyeglass fix. Upcycled shower head. Coming soon to Kickstarter: The Ravioli Racket. Taco maker. The obsolete CD's ultimate indignity.
