Nolan’s “Odyssey” Is The “Epic Of All Epics”

Filming is past the halfway point on Christopher Nolan’s Greek myth epic “The Odyssey” with shooting having taken place in Morocco, Sicily and other Mediterranean locales. The production team has now left Europe and moved to Los Angeles for soundstage shooting on the Universal lot.

Homer’s 8th-century BC poem recounts the ten-year journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War. He and his crew encounter many perils, including massive monsters, lethal sirens, a sorceress and the vengeful god of the sea.

Meanwhile, Odysseus’s wife and grown son must contend with aggressive suitors who have designs on the throne. Presumably, that includes stunt coordinator James Newman, who recently discussed his experience working on it.

In a since-deleted episode of the Action for Everyone podcast (via ScreenRant), Newman couldn’t say much beyond discussing the scale of the project:

“They’re never going to make a movie like this again. I think it’s going to be an epic of all epics. It’s going to be Nolan at his best. No holds barred. He fights a battle that a lot of people aren’t fighting. The coordinator came to us with scout pictures of locations, and it’s just all over Europe because Odysseus’ journey is crazy, it’s like 10 years long.

They found locations, and Nolan would go like, ‘Okay, this cave, has anyone ever filmed here before?’ And the local guy is like, ‘No.’ [Nolan] is like, ‘Okay, great, we’re going to film here.’ This like untouched place. He wants to be the first person there to do it, he wants to feel like no one has ever touched ground here. And every location is a hike. There’s a castle, I think it’s Odysseus’ home, but it’s up on a hill and it’s like a two-kilometre hike to get up there.”

Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Cosmo Jarvis, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Corey Hawkins, Bill Irwin, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Nick Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, and Maurice Compte co-star in the film.

Nolan’s $250 million-budget and IMAX-shot “The Odyssey” is set to hit cinemas on July 17th 2026.
