A brand new “Ecco the Dolphin” game, plus remasters of the two originals, are currently in development with plans for some sort of reveal taking place on April 25th 2026.
Franchise creator Ed Annunziata spoke with Xbox Wire for Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and was asked about the future of the franchise.
Annunziata says: “Me and the entire original team are going to remaster the original Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time games. Then we will make a new, third game with contemporary play and GPU sensibilities.”
He directs players to a ‘stay tuned’ website with a countdown clock currently counting down to April 25th 2026.
Hints of an “Ecco” remaster emerged back in January when SEGA reportedly filed new trademarks in Japan for the game series. It comes amidst a recent push at SEGA to revive old properties like “Jet Set Radio,” “Streets of Rage,” “Golden Axe,” “Shinobi,” “Virtua Fighter” and “Crazy Taxi”.
The original “Ecco the Dolphin” released in late 1992 and scored praise for its visuals, audio and difficulty. The sequel, “Ecco: The Tides of Time,” hit Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994.
No further details about the unnamed third game have been revealed.
