Just as “Paddington in Peru” finally hit U.S. cinemas the other week, the marmalade munching character has found himself at the center of a case of cyber crime.
The Sun reports that UK showbiz talent company The Agency, which represents the estate of Paddington creator Michael Bond, has been hacked by a ransomware group believed to be based in Russia.
The group has reportedly demanded the West London firm pay a ransom to prevent sensitive data being released online.
The company has refused to pay and contacted the Metropolitan Police’s cybercrime unit and the Information Commissioner’s Office, which are investigating the security breach.
In a statement to their employees, the company said that: “We have taken measures to ensure the security of our systems and continue to closely monitor them as a priority”. They also reportedly indicate that there’s a “reasonable chance” the data was leaked at some point.
The breach comes as StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh says there’s a bright future ahead for the “Paddington” franchise, confirming “there will be a fourth film” and work is underway on a new TV series as well as a stage show musical.
