A rough idea of the movie line-up for the Cannes Film Festival in May has emerged over at Deadline, with a number of high-profile titles looking set to potentially premiere on the Croisette in May.
Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is at a ’50:50′ chance of premiering at the fest, other blockbusters won’t be joining them.
That includes James Gunn’s “Superman,” Pixar’s “Elio” and Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” which won’t be at the fest, while Joseph Kosinski’s “F1” will have its own premiere in Monaco at a different time.
Films that are said to be in the running include Spike Lee’s Kurosawa remake “Highest 2 Lowest,” Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague” and Jim Jarmusch’s “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother”.
Also likely on the list are Oliver Hermanus’ “The History Of Sound,” the Dardenne brothers’ “Young Mothers,” Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” Raoul Peck’s “Orwell,” Fatih Akin’s “Amrum” and Arnaud Desplechin’s “An Affair”.
Rebecca Zlotowski’s Jodie Foster-led French-language murder mystery “Vie Privée”, which Sony Pictures Classics acquired North American rights to earlier today, is also said to be in the running. Foster plays a renowned psychiatrist who investigates the suspicious death of one of her patients.
The directorial debuts of Scarlett Johansson (“Eleanor The Great”) and Kristen Stewart (“The Chronology Of Water”) are also said to have a shot at debuting.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” is expected to miss Cannes in favor of a debut at Venice in August should the film be delayed as expected, while the berths for Lynne Ramsay’s “Die, My Love,” Paul Greengrass’ “The Lost Bus,” Terrence Malick’s “The Way Of The Wind” and Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind” are all unclear at this time.
Other films like Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Derek Cianfrance’s “Roofman,” Park Chan Wook’s “No Other Choice,” Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” and David Lowery’s “Mother Mary” are all expected to wait until the Fall.
