Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17” pulled in $19.1 million domestically and $24 million overseas in its first weekend outside of Bong’s home country Korea – making for a $43.6 million global opening.
Combined with its first week Korean receipts, the film is up to a current financial total of $53.3 million globally, a decent start for an R-rated and offbeat original sci-fi film.
Robert Pattinson stars in the movie about a disposable employee put to work on an ice world. Blending absurdist dark comedy, sci-fi action and a Terry Gilliam-esque approach – the film has received only softly positive reviews thus far.
The main issue is the cost, the film’s production budget sits at $118 million with a further $80 million spent on marketing, and rival execs indicate that the film has to hit around $275-300 million globally to break even on the big screen.
Its chances of making profit with these numbers seem slim at this point, especially as the film flopped in China with $1.3 million in its debut.
“Captain America: Brave New World” meanwhile is now up to $370.8 million worldwide and is suffering from the same issue – with a $180 million budget and $100 million marketing spend, it needs to keep its momentum up if its going to turn a profit.
