As we know, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” is set to open to an estimated $100 million domestically over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend along with a further $92.4 million overseas.
We also know it’s doing this despite some very mediocre reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film is pulling in a 50% and 5.5/10 average rating from critics, while on Metacritic it’s at just 54/100 with critics.
Most notably though, the film received the MCU’s lowest CinemaScore to date with a ‘B-‘. Now Variety reports that sources close to the film are dismissing the negativity, saying they “believe that CinemaScore isn’t the best measure of moviegoer reception” and the exit poll’s sample size is just too small.
The source cites the Rotten Tomatoes ‘verified audience score’ of 80% (4.1/5) as a better indicator. It’s an interesting argument as several years ago the RT audience score became a serious point of contention when “Captain Marvel” was subject to enough review bombing it caused the site to change its practices in terms of audience review scores.
The trade also points to exit poll tracker PostTrak that reported that parents and kids gave the new Cap film a 4/5 – though the same service has general audience scores at just 3/5. The Metacritic audience score meanwhile sits at 6.7/10, and IMDb has the film at 6.1/10 with 35,000 reviews counted.
All eyes will be on the second weekend box-office drop and whether the film will follow the likes of other recent Marvel fare, which has seen drops as sharp as 67-78% in their sophomore weekends.
