Indie publisher Polden has announced an August 7 release date for their upcoming “Lovecraft meets Papers, Please” horror game, Static Dread. The accompanying new trailer teases the awakening of Cthulhu and offers a glimpse into the game’s unique blend of atmospheric storytelling and bureaucratic gameplay. And, if you’re keen on getting a taste of that storytelling while managing a lighthouse in the aftermath of a global cataclysm, Static Dread has a demo available on Steam.

In the aftermath of the previously-mentioned global cataclysm, the harbour authorities have reactivated an ancient lighthouse, hoping to keep the seas navigable amidst the growing chaos. You, a lone keeper, have been dispatched to the island, and tasked with manning the beacon. The fate of passing vessels and the nearby town now rests in his hands.

Each night, your duties grow more perilous. Mariners report encounters with creatures beyond the comprehension of science. Ships drift back from distant waters – empty, their crews vanished without a trace. In the island’s fishing village, the locals whisper prayers to sea gods and perform rituals to raise the dead.

You’ll be meeting some of these islanders as you carry out your duties amongst the unknowable horror Static Dread holds. You’ll need to preserve your sanity, protect your loved ones, and guide the vessels entrusted to you through the abyss to one of the game’s multiple endings.
