Five years after legal issues saw the $34 million-budgeted project shut down during post-production back in 2020, a wild ten-minute sizzle reel for “Kung Fury 2” has leaked online initially on YouTube and now also on social media.

The promo is so over-the-top it makes the already wacky original half-hour “Kung Fury” short from 2015 seem almost demure in comparison.

Writer/director David Sandberg returns as Kung Fury, leading his team of human, dinosaur, and hybrid human-dino crime-fighters called the Thundercops who set out to clean up the streets of Miami in 1985 and save them from Adolf Hitler/Kung Führer (Jorma Taccone).

There are appearances from Arnold Schwarzenegger as a gun-toting U.S. president, Alexandra Shipp as a plucky reporter, and David Hasselhoff as himself who can also transform into a KITT-esque car named the Hoff 9000.

By far though, the biggest reason to see the clip is Michael Fassbender as Colt Magnum – the world’s greatest FBI agent. Donning a tan, a massive mullet and a strong American accent, the Irish actor takes the Martin Riggs-style unstable rule-breaking good cop archetype to the extreme.

From using his gun to light his cigars and type mantras, to metaphors about lion eating and homoerotic training montages, it’s wonderfully silly stuff which Fassbender seems to relish playing.

Variety has confirmed with the filmmakers that the 10-minute sizzle – uploaded to an anonymous YouTube account – is legitimate. While the original link has been taken down, copies are still floating around.

Sandberg tells the trade it is an “internal promo video” never supposed to be public because the VFX are all temp and it gives away major plot points. He adds:

“I hope at least people can see the passion that we poured into the movie, the world deserves to see it as it was meant to be seen. This movie has been held hostage for the past 5 years but I promise to keep fighting for it and make sure this film gets the chance it truly deserves.”

The project was shot in 2019 and aimed to be a feature-length spin on the 2015 short, so far the reception to the leaked video has been wildly positive. However the project still remains caught up in a lawsuit between the producers and the film’s investors.
