This week’s Compensation Clinic comes from a GOOD stay at the InterContinental Athens in Greece, where the hotel was full and they couldn’t upgrade.

Remember that you can email us, send a message via Facebook, or use Twitter to include photos, too. We’ll try to cover Compensation Clinic cases here regularly.

You can access IHG’s page for the Ambassador benefits here.

IHG has offered, for a long time, a paid program that is only applicable for stays at InterContinental hotels (InterContinental Ambassador) that comes with guaranteed benefits.

If an InterContinental is unable to provide one of the guaranteed benefits, then the Ambassador member is eligible for F&B credit or bonus points:

Guaranteed Benefit – Compensation if Guaranteed Benefit not available

Room Upgrade

Either a Restaurant & Bar or Spa credit of USD50, or 10,000 IHG One Rewards points (provided only once per stay). Not applicable on Reward Nights / Free Nights.

4pm late check-out

Either a Restaurant & Bar or Spa credit of USD50, or 10,000 IHG One Rewards points (provided only once per stay).

Club InterContinental lounge access or alternate Club experience (Royal Ambassador only

A Restaurant & Bar or Spa credit of up to USD100 per night, not to exceed the Club InterContinental upgrade supplement value.

InterContinental Athenaeum Athens

I made a two-night reservation while sitting in the Grand Hyatt Athens lobby (an awful hotel—I cancelled my stay on the spot) and turned up within 10 minutes.

The hotel is going through some renovations, and not all rooms are in use. Also, the Club InterContinental had an alternate location during my stay (the Club should be open now):

The front desk shift supervisor (if I recall her title correctly) told me that they couldn’t upgrade beyond what I had booked, and they would provide the points per the Ambassador benefit guarantee:

And the points were posted without any follow-up on my part.

Conclusion

I didn’t mind not getting an upgrade this time, as it could have been the same room on a higher floor (is that an upgrade?), and I would rather take the 10K bonus points.

This was probably the second or third time I have earned the 10K bonus points for not getting an upgrade at an InterContinental hotel, so it doesn’t happen often.

I liked that I didn’t have to remind the agent of this; they offered it automatically.

What have been your experiences with InterContinental Ambassador benefits guarantees? Have you been able to collect the bonus points or F&B credits?
