Kojima’s “Captain America” Review Fires Debate

In the world of video games, few are more revered and considered the ultimate auteur than game designer Hideo Kojima.

The man knows his way around convoluted storylines, his work on “Metal Gear Solid” containing some of the most complex and dense lore ever seen in gaming with multiple time jumps, twists and more.

In a new and brief review of Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World,” Kojima has expressed confusion over events – and his reaction has led to a debate about the interconnectedness of the MCU.

In his posting on X, Kojima said:

“I watched ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ in IMAX. I vaguely remember Sam receiving the shield in ‘Endgame’ but when did he officially become Cap? Is it because I haven’t seen ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?’ And what’s this about the Avengers being reorganized? I’m also getting it mixed up with the ‘Thunderbolts’ trailer.”

The comments have reignited the discussion about how up through ‘Endgame’, the Marvel Cinematic Universe drew a firm line between its film and TV efforts – with the former ignoring events of the latter.

Since 2020 though, Marvel has had multiple Disney+ series that do tie into the MCU and though not necessary viewing – they do help viewers understand the films fully.

This has fed into a divide between those who firmly won’t watch Marvel’s shows (or much TV at all) and want a ‘film only’ approach again, those who think it has added complexity and become too akin to homework, those who like the option of the added depth with a TV series, those who can’t get enough and want more of everything, and those who have simply given up on the MCU altogether.

The comments come as the film saw a 68% drop domestically in its second weekend – the third largest drop of the MCU to date. Nonetheless the film has grossed $289.4 million globally to date so far.
