Ian MacKaye remixes 7Seconds’ ‘New Wind’ for reissue (stream a previously unreleased track)
7Seconds will reissue their original 1986 album ‘New Wind’ along with a remixed version by original producer Ian MacKaye with bonus tracks.

Melodic hardcore pioneers 7Seconds will continue their ongoing reissue campaign with a new edition of 1986’s New Wind. It comes out May 23 via Trust Records, in partnership with the album’s original label, BYO, and it’s more than a standard reissue. In addition to re-releasing the original album (remastered from the original tapes), they’re also putting out Change In My Head, which features new mixes of every song on New Wind by the album’s original producer, Ian MacKaye (of Minor Threat, Fugazi, etc), and Inner Ear Studios’ Don Zientara. Change In My Head also tacks on two previously unreleased tracks from the New Wind sessions, “Change In My Head” and “Compro.” The title track is streaming now, and it sounds as much like a classic 7Seconds ripper as everything on the original LP. Listen below.
New Wind and Change In My Head will be sold as one release, and the vinyl comes with a 24-page oral history with unseen photos, flyers, and memorabilia, laid out by Bryan Ray Turcotte. Pre-order it with New Wind on purple vinyl and Change In My Head on clear vinyl in the BV shop. Here’s a mock-up of the variants and booklet:
Reflecting on New Wind, Kevin Seconds says:
The whole time period, between the winter of 1985 and all throughout 1986, was arguably the most important and life-changing period for 7SECONDS. We all were starting to feel like the adults that we fought so rigorously to never become. Members were getting married, having kids, trying to hold down real jobs and face responsibilities while still maintaining our so-called “hardcore cred” and attempting to feel relevant. It was an incredibly emotional and complicated time for all of us but man, did it ever make us tough and more determined to do what we wanted to do as creative people and as a band.
Steve Youth adds:
There were certainly bands that came before us. Bad Religion, they made records like Into the Unknown, where they shifted their sounds. People were calling T.S.O.L. L.O.S.T, but I loved their second album, Beneath the Shadows, which is more melodic and psychedelic. The Rites of Spring record was also very important to me. Egg Hunt. The boys were listening to U2 as well as the Buck Pets. I was listening to nothing but metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Dark Angel, but I was also listening to a lot of R.E.M.
To celebrate the release, Kevin Seconds and Ian MacKaye will be in conversation at LA’s Brain Dead Studios on April 15 at 7 PM. The discussion will also stream live on Trust Records’ YouTube channel.
7Seconds have one upcoming show at the moment: Punk Rock Bowling.
