A new report claims that Discord — the biggest gaming chat platform — has plan to go public, leaving players concerned. According to the Financial Times, Discord wants to appeal to a wider audience, and is already in talks with banks for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States.
Sony made minority investment in Discord to enhance PSN gaming experience
FT further claims that Discord had originally planned to go public back in 2021 but put plans on hold due to “political and market uncertainty.” Coincidentally, it was in 2021 when Sony made a minority investment in Discord to enhance gaming experience on the PlayStation Network. However, players have bemoaned slow improvements in Discord integration.
Gamers are already expressing concerns over FT’s report, citing previous examples of communication services that fell from grace. There’s also a concern that Discord doesn’t quite make money as it has largely avoided advertisements, so if it goes public, this will have to change.
Discord previously dodged a $12 billion takeover bid from Microsoft the same year it partnered with Sony.
“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together,” Sony said at the time.
