Enel has opened its global contest, asking participants to redefine wind turbines

Enel's contest is open to architectural firms, engineering companies, start-ups, universities and students from all over the world.

Proposals should be developed according to criteria of reduced environmental and landscape impact, technical/functional suitability, flexibility of use, as well as economic and financial sustainability. Designs should also respect local communities and comply with current regulations.

The WinDesign contest is split into two phases, with the first phase inviting designers to submit drawings and projects by 16 June 2025. There is also an explanatory workshop that will take place on 15 May 2025.

At the end of phase one, an internal Enel judging panel will consider the submissions and decide which proposals will be admitted to phase two. A prize of €5,000 will be awarded to each project selected for phase two.

The second phase, which will begin on 1 July 2025, will involve the submission of a detailed project and a "technical economic report" on the feasibility of the proposed solutions. Details can be found in the competition's regulations.

At the end of phase two, a panel of experts will establish the final ranking. The winning proposal will receive a prize fund of €250,000, the second place prize will be €150,000 and the third place prize is €50,000. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 10 November 2025.

In addition, there will be three non-cumulative special awards of €15,000 each for projects excelling in the categories of Design, Technological and Economic Feasibility, and Innovation and Sustainability.

Enel explained that submissions need to be designed in accordance with an applicable technical standard, such as the IEC International Standards.
