‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Wicked’ Win Top Honors at ACE Eddie Awards

“Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot” were the top film winners at the 75th ACE Eddie Awards, which took place on Friday evening at UCLA’s Royce Hall, nearly two weeks after the Oscars and nearly two months after the Eddies’ original date of Jan. 18. The ceremony held by the American Cinema Editors was postponed in January due to the wildfires that raged through the L.A. metro area earlier this year.

Wins by Juliette Welfling for “Emilia Pérez” and Myron Kerstein for “Wicked” stood in contrast to the outcome at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, when Sean Baker won film editing for “Anora.” Last year, “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” won at the Eddies, and “Oppenheimer” went on to win the Oscar. In the six-plus decades that the American Cinema Editors have been giving out awards, one of its feature-film winners has then won the Oscar for Best Film Editing about two-thirds of the time. In the 25 years since ACE split its top film award into separate drama and comedy or musical categories, its drama winner has taken the Oscar 14 times and its comedy/musical winner has done so twice.

Mary Blee won the animated-feature Eddie with “The Wild Robot,” while Michelle McMillan won on the TV side for “X-Men ’97.” In the nonfiction categories, Monique Zavistovski took home top film honors for “Will & Harper,” while Evan Wise, Charles Divak, Adrienne Gits and Doug Abel triumphed in TV for “Chimp Crazy.”

The other TV winners were Maria Gonzales and Aika Miyake for “Shōgun,”
Peter H. Oliver and Benjamin Gerstein for “Baby Reindeer,” Russell Griffin for “Frasier,” Liza Cardinale and Dane McMaster for “What We Do in the Shadows,” Doc Crotzer for “Roadhouse” and for “Welcome to Wrexham,” Tim Wilsbach, Steve Welch, Michael Brown, Michael Oliver, Tim Roche, Matt Wafaie, Jenny Krochmal and Mohamed el Manasterly.

Special awards went to “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu (Filmmaker of the Year) and film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch (Career Achievement).
