“Doctor Who” Recasting Rumors Shot Down

A source for the BBC and Disney+ series “Doctor Who” has shot down rumours that emerged over the weekend suggesting the show would go on a lengthy hiatus.

The second season of Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Fifteenth Doctor airs later this year, the overall fifteenth season of the series since the 2005 reboot.

A report from The Sun claimed the franchise would go on a lengthy hiatus, possibly for up to a decade, following low ratings during the first season of Gatwa’s run.

The report also indicated that the actor is planning to move to Los Angeles for bigger roles, he’ll regenerate in the upcoming episodes, and the sequence may have already been filmed.

Radio Times however got in touch with a “Doctor Who” spokesperson who told them “story is incorrect” there is no hiatus or cancellation at present with the decision on a third season with Gatwa’s Doctor to be determined after the second airs. They also say there’s potentially more to come after the new season:

“The deal with Disney Plus was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines.”

Disney+ has released five “Doctor Who” specials and the eight-episode 2024 run of the series – thirteen in all. The new season is expected to stick to eight episodes like the first, meaning another five are still to air after. No air date has yet been set.
