After a long path to get there, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” finally hit cinemas yesterday and so far the reception hasn’t been good.

Along with a very mixed critical score, the film managed a B- CinemaScore in audience exit polls – the worst for an MCU film to date.

Speaking with Phase Zero, the film’s director Julius Onah was asked about the negative reviews and responded diplomatically: “You make the best movie you can, you put it out there, and you let audiences react to it.”

One thing he did take issue with was the many reports of numerous reshoots on the film. The filmmaker downplays those, indicating there was only one major bout which is pretty standard for Marvel films:

“We did one period of additional photography, which is the same on all of these movies. There are so many variables, and [additional photography] becomes essential to fine-tuning and coming up with a thing that we know audiences will love.”

He notably didn’t mention how long that period was, previous reports suggesting it went almost as long as three months. Criticism of the movie has focused on its rough editing and lack of a cohesive storyline, as well as the post-credits scene.

END CREDITS SPOILERS AHEAD

The film’s end credits stinger, which sees Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) visiting Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) on The Raft, has been heavily criticised. Onah explains how it happened:

“That came together as we were also just thinking through, ‘How do you want to resolve the storyline of Samuel Sterns?’ and, ‘How do you want to tip the hat to what’s gonna potentially be coming?’. I am not gonna give any spoilers on Avengers because that’s not something I would do and not something that frankly I have spoilers to give, but I will say, there are things this is teeing up, that I think are gonna be really exciting for audiences. As we know, Captain America has historically been a leader of the Avengers and, in terms of ‘The Others’ that are coming, there’s gonna be a lot of fun possibilities that the subsequent movies can play with.”

END SPOILERS

“Captain America: Brave New World” is now open in cinemas and is expected to earn around $90-96 million domestically over the long weekend.
