Late last year actor Patrick Dempsey teased that he wanted to return for the upcoming “Scream 7” and that there had already been conversations about him rejoining the franchise but he was “waiting on the script”.
Dempsey starred in the third film as detective Mark Kincaid but hasn’t been seen in the franchise since. However, Neve Campbell’s Sydney Prescott referred to her husband Mark in the fifth film which many took to mean Dempsey’s character.
In January came the news that Dempsey would not be returning and that Joel McHale had joined the cast as Sydney’s husband who will be named Mark Evans instead and is the chief of police in the Indiana town of Pine Grove.
So what happened behind-the-scenes? Dempsey tells Variety: “It just didn’t work out and we were dealing with the fires and everything that was going on and the schedule didn’t work out, unfortunately.”
Dempsey lives in Malibu which was impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires. Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown all return from prioer films along with Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley despite their on screen deaths in prior films.
Joining them are new cast members including Isabel May, Mark Consuelos, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner and Anna Camp.
Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first “Scream,” makes his directorial debut in the franchise with the seventh film, which opens in cinemas February 27th 2026.
