Turns out Hideo Kojima’s upcoming “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is primarily set in Australia according to reviewers who’ve been able to sink many hours into the game.
The original title dealt with a courier helping reconnect North America via supplies and a wireless communications network in the wake of a cataclysmic event that caused destructive creatures to begin roaming the Earth.
The upcoming sequel boasts a much quicker pace and more action as it starts off in Mexico before you encounter a ‘gate’ which takes you through to Australia for the easy majority of the game.
The location caught many by surprise despite strong hints at it – from the use of George Miller’s likeness as a key character and the involvement of Sydney-born actress Shioli Kutsuna, to a pre-order bonus involving a Quokka hologram, and the game’s “On the Beach” title referring to the famed Gregory Peck nuclear war film set primarily in Melbourne.
According to reviewers, you start out around the bottom of Western Australia and end up traversing the red desert to the east coast by the end, crossing some of the harshest terrain on Earth and one apparently a bit more accurate than the North America of the first game which looked more like Iceland.
It’s still a game though, so the landscape is heavily shrunk in size – you can potentially cross the Nullarbor Plain on foot fairly quickly. There also is admittedly one outright wrong feature – a snow-capped peak in the middle of the country which is there mostly to block you from progressing too fast.
The game’s production team indicate Kojima was partly inspired by The Lost City, the towering sandstone formations in Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory. Plenty of other NT locations inspired the game, including Alice Springs, while players have spotted everything from echidnas, kangaroos and bilbys to things like platypus plushie dolls and even delivering ‘yeast paste’ (basically vegemite).
“Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is set for release on June th.
