Netflix have confirmed that the final two interactive specials they still have on their service will disappear from the platform this coming Monday.
What’s on Netflix reports that both “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend” are set to leave the service on May 12th. Due to the nature of the way these were done, they’re not expected to be shopped around.
The removal of these originals marks the end of the platform’s dabbling in interactive specials on the service – choose-your-own-adventure tales offering different outcomes depending upon viewer choices.
“Bandersnatch” was arguably the single most famous of these specials to be released anf follows young programmer Stefan (Fionn Whitehead) as he adapts a fantasy gamebook into a video game in 1984. Will Poulter and Craig Parkinson co-starred in the special which David Slade directed.
Several interactive specials were generated starting in 2017 with “Puss in Book”. By the end of 2024, only four remained – these two along with “Ranveer vs Wild with Bear Grylls” and “You vs. Wild”.
The ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ special was released several months after the comedy ended its four-season run. Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, Carol Kane and Jon Hamm co-starred.
Netflix these days has shifted its interactive focus to mobile and cloud gaming with TV series sticking to a more conventional streaming approach.
