Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is being turned into a TV series.

Ang Lee famously adapted elements from books in the Crane-Iron series into an Oscar-winning movie in 2000, starring Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-fat and Zhang Ziyi.

Now, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed a TV series is in the works based on the book of the same name by Wang Dulu, according to Deadline.

The official synopsis reads: “Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two star-crossed warriors, as they struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity – caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.”

Jason Ning, who worked on recently cancelled Netflix series The Brothers Sun, which also starred Michelle Yeoh, is on board to write and executive produce the series.

Ronald D. Moore, who is the showrunner on Amazon’s God Of War adaptation, is also on board to executive produce.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was originally published between 1938 and 1944 and chronicles the struggles of four generations of youxia, a type of ancient Chinese warrior folk hero.

The other books in the series include Crane Startles Kunlun, Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin, Sword Force, Pearl Shine, and Iron Knight, Silver Vase.

The 2000 film was nominated for 10 Oscars and won four including Best Foreign Language Film.

A sequel – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny – was released in 2016 and saw Yeoh return, which ended up being aired by Netflix.

Lee was not involved in the sequel, which was directed by Yuen Wo-ping, who was the action choreographer for the first film.

Yeoh meanwhile, recently starred in Wicked alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. She is set to reprise her role in the sequel, Wicked: For Good which is due for release on November 25.

The project is named after a duet from the second act of the Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman musical, originally performed by Idina Menzel’s Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth’s Glinda, and was filmed back-to-back with the first movie.
