CBS Cancels “S.W.A.T.” For A Third Time

CBS has, for a third time, cancelled its procedural series “S.W.A.T.” starring Shemar Moore, Alex Russell and Jay Harrington.

In May 2023, the series was cancelled after six seasons on CBS. Within a few days, the network changed its mind and opted to renew the show for a seventh and planned final season which premiered on February 16th last year.

A few weeks later, that final season decision was reversed, with an eighth season greenlit that premiered in October last year. Now, the show has been cancelled again with the current eighth season finishing in May to serve as its last.

Showrunner Andrew Dettman says in a statement:

“It’s heartbreaking news primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of. They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can’t give them enough credit. I feel so privileged to have been a part of the S.W.A.T. family.”

This time there isn’t expected to be any reversal. The eighth season is averaging 4.9 million in Live+7 viewers, down 20% from last season and dead last of the fourteen dramas CBS has aired this TV season. Viewership has also been down since taking over the spot left by “Blue Bloods”.

The cancellation follows on from CBS axing both “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International” earlier this week, but is proceeding with more of flagship series “FBI” and new series “FBI: CIA”.

The fate of several series still remains unclear at CBS including “The Equalizer,” “Poppa’s House” and “Watson”.
