CBS has officially cancelled its Queen Latifah-led “The Equalizer” series after five seasons, with tomorrow night’s season finale now serving as a series finale.
Like the Denzel Washington-led film trilogy of the same name, the series offered a reimagining of the iconic original 1980s procedural series starring Edward Woodward. In this case though, the lead role was gender-flipped.
Latifah stars as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic single mother quietly raising her teenage daughter with a mysterious background. She uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn, an anonymous guardian angel seeking her own personal redemption.
This season the show has been averaging 6.1 million total viewers (in Live+7) – down 25% from its Season 4 audience and ranking 12th out of CBS dramas this season – beating only “NCIS: Sydney” and the recently cancelled “S.W.A.T.”.
The cancellation also follows CBS’ decision not to proceed with a Titus Welliver-led spinoff series. Other cancellations of late at the network have included “FBI: Most Wanted,” “FBI: International,” and “Poppa’s House”.
CBS’ full fall schedule will be unveiled this coming Wednesday, May 7th.
