Billy Idol shares memories of his ’80s club days with Drew Barrymore: “It was a really incredible time”

Billy Idol has shared his memories of his ’80s club days partying with Drew Barrymore.

The punk icon joined The Drew Barrymore Show, where the pair recalled their days in the 1980s club scene – particularly venues like Studio 54 and Limelight. Idol would have been mid 20s to late 30s; Barrymore, however, would have only been a young child but was still be seen at clubs.

When asked by Barrymore: “What the hell do you remember from those days?”, Idol replied: “Not very much”, to which Barrymore responded: “Me neither — I was hoping you could colour stuff in for me.”

Though he couldn’t remember specifics, Idol told Barrymore that the ’80s were “a really incredible time”. “I really enjoyed those ‘80s years,” he added. “New York was kind of bankrupt so anything kinda went. It was like post-apocalyptic… you felt like the end of the world had sort of happened.”

Meanwhile, Barrymore shared her own memories of Idol, telling him: “The only thing I knew was that I loved you, I got to hang out with you, we were obviously playful and silly.”

Barrymore would later star in the 1998 film The Wedding Singer, which Idol made a cameo in. She told him “I was so excited to be together again”, adding that “It felt like, ‘Oh! Just yesterday we were like, out in the clubs together!’”

She went on to say: “God, I miss dancing so much. I miss the clubs! And those places played, as we said, every type of music, but you really pushed through and… changed the world. We all thank you for that.” Idol responded: “It was a super fun time.”

Idol recently announced his first album in over a decade, ‘Dream Into It’. Sharing the new single ‘Still Dancing’ alongside the announcement in February this year, ‘Dream Into It’ will arrive on streaming platforms on April 25.

‘Dream Into It’ will feature nine songs with guest appearances by Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, and Alison Mosshart of The Kills. See the full tracklist below.
