A sequel to 2005’s Will Smith-led romantic-comedy “Hitch” is reportedly in the works, but it won’t involve the film’s original director.
Speaking with Business Insider, filmmaker Andy Tennant revealed that Smith is developing a sequel to the project without his involvement – even as the director himself has an idea he thinks is worth pursuing:
“I guess Will is developing a Hitch sequel without me. I just found out about it three months ago. I had a really good idea for a sequel, and I was talking to an executive at Sony, and he said Will’s production company is developing a sequel. Hey, that’s Hollywood.”
Smith starred in the original film as a professional matchmaker who makes a living teaching men how to woo women. While helping his latest client woo the woman of his dreams, he finds out that his techniques don’t work on the gossip columnist with whom he is smitten. Eva Mendes, Kevin James, and Amber Valletta co-star.
The film proved highly profitable, making $371.6 million worldwide off a budget of around $60 million, and reviews were softly positive. Tennant says Smith has never been in touch with him since doing press for the film, but he doesn’t hold that against the star:
“I don’t have anything against Will. He hired me to make this movie. It was not an easy job for anybody, but we went around the world with the movie. Even the hard times he’d always say, ‘Wait until the junket. We’re gonna go around the world with this’ — and we did, and it was great. It was the most amazing trip I had ever been on. And when it was over, my time with Will was over. That was it. And I have never heard from him since.”
Tennant had previously directed “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Ever After” and the pilot of “Sliders” before tackling “Hitch”. He followed it up with “Fool’s Gold” and “The Bounty Hunter” and has since mostly stuck to television with shows like “The Kominsky Method” and “Bookie”.
An attempt was made by FOX and Sony Pictures Television to turn “Hitch” into a half-hour, single-camera comedy TV series in 2014 but it never got out of development.
