Earlier this month came a report from scooper MyTimeToShineH which claimed that filmmaker James Watkins was in talks to direct the “Clayface” movie currently in the works at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.
Following that, some of the trades weighed in with other potential candidates including Jeff Wadlow and J.A. Bayona, but those have all been for nought as THR reports that Watkins is now confirmed for the gig.
Watkins broke onto the scene with the utterly brutal British horror film “Eden Lake” starring Michael Fassbender, Kelly Reilly and Jack O’Connell. He followed that up with the remake of supernatural spooker “The Woman in Black” starring Daniel Radcliffe,” and last year’s well-received “Speak No Evil” remake with James McAvoy.
Here he’ll be helming from a script by Mike Flanagan (“Doctor Sleep,” “Midnight Mass,” “The Fall of the House of Usher”) in what has been dubbed a “standalone tragedy-laced horror/thriller” and which the trade claims has a tight $40 million budget.
The story sounds fairly akin to the 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series” episode introducing the character. It follows a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form – making him a walking piece of clay.
Understandable parallels are also being drawn to last year’s celebrated body horror tale “The Substance”. No casting has yet been announced with production expected to begin this year.
