Steffen Brandt to drive SLYRS Distillery’s commercial growth as new Managing Director

Travel retail veteran Steffen Brandt has joined SLYRS Bavarian Whisky Distillery as its Co-Managing Director for Sales & Marketing, effective 1 March.

Brandt will share the role with Managing Director and Master Distiller Hans Kemenater to drive SLYRS to new heights and reinforce its position as Germany’s leading whisky brand, the company said.

With over 20 years of leadership experience in fast-moving consumer goods and the beverage industry, the highly regarded industry executive has established brands across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

His career highlights include earlier leadership roles at Pitu (under the Underberg Group) and Karoo Spring Water as Managing Director.

He also played a key role in Gebr. Heinemann’s global expansion, serving as CEO of its Asia Pacific division (2008-2014) and CEO of its Americas business (2014-2016).

In his new role, Brandt is charged with accelerating SLYRS’s international growth, digital transformation and sustainability initiatives.

Brandt said: “SLYRS is more than whisky – it’s an experience. I’m excited to shape the future of this brand with Hans and the team, blending tradition with innovation for sustainable success.”

Kemenater added: “With Steffen, we have gained a strategic powerhouse who knows how to elevate premium brands on a global scale. Together, we will create fresh momentum for SLYRS and showcase Bavarian whisky excellence to the world.”

SLYRS, which has captured numerous awards including the ISW German Whisky of the Year in 2023, is “poised to explore new frontiers while remaining deeply rooted in its Bavarian heritage”.

It was recognised by Germany’s leading whisky magazine, Der Whiskybotschafter, in 2024 and won multiple accolades at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards, including Best German Blended Malt and Best German Rye Whisky.

The company noted: “The SLYRS team is confident that his strategic vision, innovative approach and global experience will serve as a catalyst for the long-term growth of the distillery. Together with the entire SLYRS community, Brandt and Kemenater will honour the brand’s traditions while shaping an ambitious, sustainable and forward-thinking future for SLYRS.”

Dubbed the “whisky pioneers from Upper Bavaria”, SLYRS has been setting standards in whisky expertise since 1999. The distillery at Schliersee is a place where tradition meets innovation, creating whisky with character and depth.

Bavarian grain and pure Alpine spring water from the Schliersee mountains are used to craft SLYRS whisky. The production and barrel-ageing process takes place on-site, ensuring a distinctive Upper Bavarian character in every bottle.

SLYRS’ portfolio includes the Single Malt Whisky Classic, aged in American white oak barrels, along with Single Malt Whisky Fifty One and Single Malt Whisky Bavarian Peat. ✈
