Sony Pictures is hanging onto “Resident Evil,” the studio winning a major bidding war to snag the rights to “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger’s upcoming horror film reinvention of the franchise reports THR.
In fact, the studio has already set a September 18th 2026 release date for the film which Cregger is attached to write and direct as his next project. Shay Hatten (“Army of the Dead,””John Wick: Chapter 4”) is co-writing.
Whereas Sony’s Screen Gems label released the prior six action-oriented Milla Jovovich-led “Resident Evil” films, Sony’s Columbia Pictures banner will release the new film which allows for a larger budget.
Constantin Film, which holds the screen rights to the acclaimed Capcom video game series since the late 1990s, will produce the reboot along with PlayStation Productions. Filming on the project aims to get underway this Summer.
The six Jovovich-led films generated $1.28 billion in global revenue and was once the highest-grossing film series based on a video game. More recent attempts like 2021’s “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” and 2022’s Netflix TV series starring the late Lance Reddick both flopped badly.
Cregger’s next film, the Josh Brolin and Julia Garner-led horror movie “Weapons,” is set up at New Line and reportedly has been scoring very high at test screenings. That will open in January next year.
