Hit anime Solo Leveling has surpassed a genre classic in terms of reviews on platform Crunchyroll, despite only having 23 episodes aired so far.

One Piece, the wildly popular series with over 1,100 episodes, previously held the record for most reviews on the platform with 596,000. Despite having a fraction of that runtime, Solo Leveling has overtaken it with 603,000.

For comparison, long-running favourite Demon Slayer has 587,000 reviews, while the epic Attack On Titan ended with 354,000 reviews. This metric is not a precise indicator of audience size, or hours watched, but it goes some way to illustrating the immense popularity of Solo Leveling early into its history.

Based on the Korean web novel by Chugong, the hit anime series takes place in a realm of gifted hunters and monsters. In this world, weak hunter Sung Jinwoo is given extraordinary strength through a mysterious programme, which kickstarts a journey across the various dungeons to discover the true source of his power.

The show is produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Shunsuke Nakashige, with Noboru Kimura writing the scripts, Tomoko Sudo designing the characters and Hiroyuji Sawano composing the music.

The first season aired from January to March 2024 to critical and fan acclaim. A second season, entitled Arise From The Shadow, premiered in January 2025. There is also a Korean drama adaptation in development.

Recently, the show’s voice actor Taito Ban (Sung Jin-woo) has built excitement for season two of the anime show, by promising a “darker direction” than fans will have seen before.

“(Jin-woo) has undergone a huge change, both mentally and physically” he said, adding that the character may be heading in an unexpected direction. “All of these levelling ups have meaning. Story-wise, Jin-woo’s path is not bright, and he is heading in a dark direction”.
