While James Gunn’s “Superman” didn’t receive a Super Bowl trailer last weekend, it did get a wee bit of promotion via the Puppy Bowl.
That somewhat odd approach continues this weekend with a new TV spot airing during the NBA on TNT with Gunn, new Superman star David Corenswet and NBA Hall of Famer and diehard Superman fan Shaquille O’Neal all involved.
In the spot, Shaq is looking at the new Superman costume on display and figuring out if he fits it. Corenswet and Gunn soon appear and mixed signals sees Shaq thinking he’s been rejected from playing Superman and walking away.
Gunn makes a reference to Shaq as an ‘original superhero’, referring to his appearance in the widely panned “Steel” back in the 1990s.
Whereas the Puppy Bowl stuff last week had a bit of a mixed reception, this spot has fared better and has been helped by Gunn releasing some outtakes from the recording of it.
Both the promo and the outtakes can be seen below. The new “Superman” is set to release in cinemas in July.
