Powell Got Arnie’s “Running Man” Blessing

Glen Powell says that he was given the blessing of the original “The Running Man” star Arnold Schwarzenegger to take on his role from the 1987 action feature.

Powell serves as the star of British filmmaker Edgar Wright’s new adaptation of the Stephen King short story, one that’s expected to be more akin to that original work than the 1987 film which skewed more sci-fi.

Powell will be taking on the same role that Schwarzenegger did of Ben Richards, a man forced to take part in a game show where he’s hunted by professional killers. Powell, Wright and co-stars Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin all appeared in Vegas this past week to promote the film.

This new version wrapped filming earlier this year and, while appearing at a launch event for the condiment line Smash Kitchen, Powell tells People he and Wright got to FaceTime with Schwarzenegger:

“Arnold gave us his blessing. Patrick Schwarzenegger is a great friend of mine and I asked Patrick if I could talk to Arnold and I hadn’t seen Arnold since we shot Expendables in Bulgaria. Arnold gave us his full blessing and we get to give Arnold a very specific fun gift from the movie in a couple of weeks here. So I’m very excited to see him.”

Powell told the Cinemacon last week that making the project was “the hardest thing I’ve done in my life”. We’ll see the results for ourselves when the movie hits cinemas on November 7th.
