Six actors have taken on the name James Bond in the official series. Sean Connery and Roger Moore have passed on, George Lazenby is happily retired, while the other three are still working to this day – Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
In the wake of Amazon obtaining full creative control of the Bond franchise the other week, both Craig and Dalton have weighed in on the decision with the former not seeming to care and the latter being a bit more thoughtful.
Now Brosnan has spoken about it with the UK’s The Daily Telegraph, offering the most considered answer of all.
Brosnan says it is essentially a ‘given’ that whoever is hired should be a British actor and adds that he thinks it was the right decision for the producers to hand creative control to Amazon:
“In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does come with a certain lament. I thought it was coming for some time I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael.
It takes great courage for them to let go. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect. History has been passed on and I’m very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies I made with Barbara and Michael.
That we moved the needle, that we brought it back to life. It had been dormant [for] six years and GoldenEye was such a success that it continued and went from strength to strength…You know, everything changes, everything falls apart, and I wish them well.”
Brosnan is Irish, one of only two non-English actors to take on the role (Lazenby is Australian). The comments follow in the wake of a report this weekend citing a memo circulated by Amazon that Bond should remain “male and British or Commonwealth” which would technically disqualify Brosnan.
Brosnan starred as Bond from 1995-2002 across four films, including the celebrated “Goldeneye” which reinvigorated the series in post-Cold War times after a lengthy hiatus. His other Bond credits were “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “The World is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day”.
