Patti Smith has announced a new book titled Bread Of Angels, which is set to be some of her most “intimate and visionary” work yet. Find out more below.

The book is set to be published on November 4, and will come as the legendary songwriter hits the roads as part of a tour celebrating 50 years of her iconic first album ‘Horses’.

According to a new description, the memoir will see Smith shed light on all aspects of her life – covering everything from her working-class upbringing in Philadelphia and South Jersey, all the way through to her withdrawal from the public eye.

It has been over a decade in the works, and the release date was chosen as it is “especially meaningful” to the artist, marking both the birth date of her longtime partner and friend Robert Mapplethorpe and the anniversary of her husband Fred’s death.

“It took a decade to write this book, grappling with the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime,” Smith said about the memoir (via The Guardian). “I’m hoping that people will find something they need.” Visit here to pre-order the memoir.

The book follows on from the music icon sharing the book Just Kids, which saw her take home the National Book Award for nonfiction back in 2010, and was written following a promise to the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Bread Of Angels will join a list of other books written by Smith too, including M Train – which centred around her relationship with husband, Fred “Sonic” Smith – and Year Of The Monkey, which tackled themes of loss, populism, environmentalism, and getting older. It was written in the run-up to the artist’s 70th birthday.

Speaking about the enduring legacy that Patti Smith continues to make, Alexis Kirschbaum, head of Bloomsbury Trade (which is publishing the book in the UK) said: “Patti Smith is a living legend. While her lyrics and music have inspired generations of listeners, her books have made her one of the most cherished and influential writers of the last 50 years. Bread of Angels confirms her position as a writer.”

News of the memoir comes just days after Bruce Springsteen, Flea, Karen O, Michael Stipe, Johnny Depp and more led an all-star jam with the songwriter at a tribute concert in New York.

Dubbed ‘People Have the Power: A Celebration of Patti Smith’, the gig took place at the famed Carnegie Hall and saw 100 per cent of its net proceeds donated to music education for underserved youth. Alongside musical performances, A-listers such as Scarlett Johansson, Michael Shannon, Jim Jarmusch and Sean Penn made appearances to read Patti’s poetry.

Moving further into 2025, Smith has announced a run of special gigs to celebrate the 50 years of her debut studio album, ‘Horses’ across Europe, the UK and the US.

The special shows have been scheduled for seven European cities: London, Dublin, Madrid, Bergamo, Brussels, Oslo and Paris. The live dates in the UK capital are due to take place at The Palladium on October 12 and 13. See the full list of dates and get any remaining tickets here.
