Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is known for trying to go as practical as possible with his filmmaking.
Whereas his earlier efforts like “Batman Begins” and “The Prestige” among others utilised miniatures and CG to a good extent, as his movies progressed he’s become seemingly obsessed with doing shots in camera and for real wherever possible.
The result is some of the more colorful and fantastical visual compositions of his earlier work have been curtailed in favor of doing things more practically with real world elements, and it has become something of a meme about Nolan that whatever he’s doing he wants to do it for real.
Then came the announcement that his next work will be an adaptation of Homer’s epic 8th century BCE Greek poem “The Odyssey,” a tale full of mystical beings and sequences that frankly can’t be done practically – but boy is he going to try.
According to fan account NolanAnalyst, the scenes from the story involving the Cyclops Polyphemus will be shot at Nestor Cave and Voidokilia Beach in Greece from March 13th-20th.
The sequence will utilise a 6×6 meter mechanical anthropomorphic puppet which will be built inside Nestor’s Cave. The installation will “be temporary, fully reversible, and constructed with portable materials to avoid any damage to the site.”
In addition, special precautions including geotextile and sand layers will be used to protect the cave with preparations beginning this month that includes cleaning and securing the cave entrance.
Whether Nolan is going to build a functional whirlpool and giant six-headed serpent-like sailor-eating monster for real – that’s a wait and see for now.
“The Odyssey” is set to release in cinemas and IMAX on July 17th 2026.
