Narcos: Mexico actor Manuel Masalva has been placed in a medically induced coma – find out more below.
Per a Deadline report, Masalva has been placed is in a medically induced coma at a hospital in Dubai after contracting “very aggressive bacteria” and getting infected during a recent trip to the Philippines.
According to Jaime Jaramillo Espinosa, the CEO of Mexican management agency JIM Management and Masalva’s manager, Masalva underwent emergency surgery late last month after complaining of internal discomfort and pain after the doctors discovered the bacteria.
The following day, the infection reached his lungs and he had to be put into a medically induced coma. Doctors have since been able to administer him with the necessary antibiotics, and have noted that Masalva’s lungs are reaction favourable to the treatment. However, he still remains in critical but stable condition.
The actor’s family have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to cover his treatment costs. The fundraised has reached over 1million Mexican Pesos – you can donate here.
Promoting the GoFundMe page, Masalva’s close friend and fellow actor Mario Morán said in an Instagram video: “My brother is fighting for his life far from home. I want to ask for your help in this very difficult moment. As was made known yesterday, Manuel Masalva — who is one of my best friends [and] who is really like a brother to me — fell victim to an aggressive bacteria while he was on vacation. This led to him being in an induced coma and now his situation continues to be delicate.”
“The medical costs are huge and in a country where everything is even more difficult. Any help, however small it may seem, can make a difference in this difficult moment. If you are able to help, I would thank you with all of my heart.”
Manuel Masalva is best known for the role of Ramón Arellano Félix in Netflix’ Narcos spin-off Narcos: Mexico alongside Diego Luna, Bad Bunny and Scoot McNairy. He has also starred in the telenovela La Rosa de Guadalupe and recently the series La Guzmán.
