Megyn Kelly scolded George Clooney on Monday for giving “a lecture on how journalism is imploding” to Broadway audiences that come to see him star as Edward R. Murrow in “Good Night, and Good Luck.”
Clooney adapted his 2005 film about broadcast news pioneer Murrow reporting on Sen. Joe McCarthy’s “Red Scare” on air in 1954 into a stage play. In the Oscar-nominated film, Murrow was played by David Strathairn while Clooney co-wrote, directed and co-starred as TV producer Fred Friendly. On Broadway, Clooney takes on the lead role in the play, which opens April 3 at the Winter Garden Theatre.
Kelly, apparently not having seen the play herself, said on “The Megyn Kelly Show” Monday, “I guess at the end of this show, he turns around and looks at the audience and offers a lecture on how journalism is imploding, that what’s happening with the Trump administration is like McCarthyism, that we need a full, free and fair press to hold this administration’s feet to the fire.”
The host then shared a clip from Clooney’s “60 Minutes” interview, which aired Sunday and earned the ire of President Donald Trump on social media.
“Journalism and telling truth to power has to be waged like war is waged,” Clooney told the CBS news magazine. “It doesn’t just happen accidentally. It takes people saying, ‘We’re going to do these stories and you’re going to have to come after us.'”
Kelly commented after the clip, “That’s him backstage with his Edward R. Murrow, like wannabe cast mate supporters lecturing all of us on how it needs to be done, you might say democracy dies in darkness, if the journalism people don’t do more journalism-ing.”
Her podcast’s guest Ben Shapiro weighed, as well. “He’s so tiresome just as a human being. He’s unbelievably tiresome,” he said of Clooney, adding that the actor and director’s wife, Amal Clooney, who is an international law and human rights activist, “was complicit in some of the worst propaganda of the last several years” for prosecuting Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes against Palestinians.
Shapiro added that Clooney “may have single-handedly been responsible for Joe Biden stepping out of the race,” citing his July 2024 op-ed in the New York Times. He continued, “This idea that he’s like a powerless person who’s fighting for the rights of the journalistic establishment … The journalistic establishment is what brought us here.”
“George Clooney’s idea of journalism is just toe the party line when it helps the left and say what needs to be said and bury what needs to be said so long as it will hurt the right,” Shapiro said.
