A new report at The Insneider is claiming that famed “Black Swan” and “The Whale” director Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to direct the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Cujo” at Netflix.
If it happens, it will mark Aronofsky’s first scripted feature for a streaming service, and one of the latest high-profile filmmaker to have tackled a Stephen King adaptation in recent years. The project was announced just the other week.
“Cujo” is one of King’s most well-known novels, the 1981 work deals with a once-friendly St. Bernard dog who turns into a killer after being bitten by a rabid bat, and a mother and son trapped in a sweltering car by the monstrous dog.
The property was previously adapted onto film in 1983 with Dee Wallace. That scored mixed reviews but made back more than three times its budget. Roy Lee will produce the new take.
In terms of other King adaptations recently, Gary Dauberman helmed the recent “Salem’s Lot” film which went directly to Max.
However, the rest have gone or are going theatrical including Osgood Perkins’ recent “The Monkey,” Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck,” Francis Lawrence’s already shot “The Long Walk,” and Edgar Wright’s currently in production “The Running Man”.
