TV so often represents an escape from current events and the world outside, but this week’s Samba TV Weekly Wrap shows a rare instance where art and life collide.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, the day before the Oscar-nominated film “Conclave” was added to the Amazon Prime Video library. It was fortuitous timing, as the star-studded film follows the politicking and internal machinations of a divided College of Cardinals as they hold a conclave to elect the next pope.

The combination of timing and the move to Amazon propelled the film to seventh place this week, with 740,000 households watching over the course of the week. This is noteworthy, because the film had been available on Peacock since February and had yet to crack the Top 10 at any point – not even after wins at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

With the real-life conclave set to begin on May 7, millions around the world will be watching for the white smoke signalling the election of the new pope. We here at Samba TV will be watching the data to see if enough interested viewers flock to this work of fiction to better understand what’s happening in Vatican City.

While “Conclave” made its debut, there’s a more familiar sight atop the chart this week, as “The Last of Us” was the most-watched streaming program for the second consecutive week. Meanwhile, “Ransom Canyon” is in second place again. The Netflix western debuted on the service on April 17, so this marked its first full week of availability. “The Last of Us,” like other shows on Max/HBO, benefits from a weekly schedule, so despite the instant popularity, “Ransom Canyon” may never taste the top spot.

In third, we have a debut with “Havoc.” Nearly 2 million households tuned in to the Tom Hardy action movie on Netflix in the first three days it was available on the service. That’s followed by another Netflix action flick, “iHostage,” a Dutch-language film about a hostage situation at an Apple store in Amsterdam.

“You” caps off a quartet of Netflix titles, coming in fifth this week. The fifth season of the psychological thriller series returned on April 24. While it had strong enough viewership to crack the Top 10, viewership was down by 42% for this season compared to Season 4.

In sixth place is “Your Friends & Neighbors.” The Apple TV+ title slides down two spots in its second week on the chart.

Next, we have tales of two dystopias, with “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu coming in eighth, followed by “Black Mirror” on Netflix in ninth. And, closing out the chart this week is “Andor” on Disney+ with 1.2 million households watching the season 2 premiere across the first week it was available.

Turning the dial to linear, “American Idol” remains at number one for the second consecutive week. It’s trailed by “Tracker,” one of its primary competitors on the chart. Meanwhile, the normal third point in our linear “Big Three,” “The Voice,” takes a tumble this week, coming in seventh.

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” came in fourth place ahead of a bevy of scripted titles. Those scripted series are “Chicago Med” in fifth, “FBI” in sixth, “Watson” in eighth, and “Chicago Fire” in ninth.

Last but not least, “Wheel of Fortune” is tenth this week.

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television, sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
