“Cobra Kai” showrunners Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald have assured fans that the upcoming “Karate Kid: Legends” movie will not have any continuity clashes with their recently finished series.
When the new “Karate Kid” film was first announced several years ago, obvious questions arose as to whether it would tie in with sequel series “Cobra Kai” – especially as Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso character was involved.
It soon became clear this would be its own thing and followed a teenager from China moving to the U.S. East Coast and beginning to study martial arts through which he finds strength and direction.
When it was indicated Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han from the 2010 “Karate Kid” movie would also star, questions rose up again about how it would handle continuity and whether it might step on the TV show’s toes.
Speaking with The Direct, the showrunners say they were right in the midst of making the final season of “Cobra Kai” when the film was announced. They and Macchio paid special attention to avoid any potential continuity clashes – allowing the show and new film to exist in the same universe:
“We just wanted to make sure that there were no contradictions so that if fans watch it, they’re like, whoa. ‘Cobra Kai’ said this, and this movie said that. And Ralph Macchio made sure of that. You know, there was nothing like that.”
Explaining how the new film fits into the overall continuity, they explain that itis essentially an offshoot of the 2010 film as opposed to a fourth film of the original series:
“It’s technically a ‘Karate Kid’ movie. You know, that’s our show’s ‘Cobra Kai,’ and the commonality is they both have Daniel LaRusso. That movie is kind of branching off the tree from the Jackie Chan movie of 2010, and you’ll have to see how they tie those things together.”
“Karate Kid: Legends” is set to hit cinemas on May 30th. The full series of “Cobra Kai” is available to stream on Netflix.
